But what about tomorrow? Well, that’ll be up to our heroes, who likely will have a thing or two to say after their nightmarish ordeal inside the secret Umbrella lab that infected the people of Raccoon City with the T-virus. While it might be a little too early to think so far ahead, Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City clearly has a plan in place for a potential sequel. In fact, it’s made abundantly clear where director Johannes Roberts and Sony Pictures want to go next in the movie’s post-credit scene, which longtime fans of the franchise won’t want to miss. The scene opens by revealing that, true to the source material, the treacherous Albert Wesker (Tom Hopper) somehow survived his death at the Spencer Mansion. If you remember, he was shot before he could hurt Sherry Birkin (Holly De Barros) and escape with the G-virus. But here he is on a hospital bed, breathing once again. What’s happening? If there’s ever a sequel, it’s clear these will be the two antagonists that Chris, Claire, Leon, and Jill will have to deal with. In the meantime, here’s a refresher regarding who Ada Wong is and what’s next for Wesker based on his history in the video games.
Who Is Ada Wong?
How could you adapt the plot of Resident Evil 2 without including Ada Wong? That was the question on many fans’ minds when she wasn’t announced as part of the reboot’s cast. But Sony was just hiding Lily Gao’s cameo for fans (and to set up the sequel, of course). Historically, Ada appears in any games featuring Leon S. Kennedy, showing up as both an arch-rival but also as an anti-hero and even somewhat of a romantic interest (although Claire will always be first in Leon’s heart). Ada has no clear allegiance throughout the series and seems to follow her own indecipherable agenda, often double-crossing and even triple-crossing others to get what she really wants. Basically, you can’t trust her. Ultimately, her goal in most of the games she appears in is to acquire samples of whatever virus or parasite is currently plaguing the characters in the story. In Resident Evil 2, she’s trying to steal a sample of the G-virus, while in Resident Evil 4 she wants a sample of Las Plagas. The point is that she generally always bests Leon, no matter how hard he tries to stop her. It’ll be very interesting to watch that dynamic on screen if a sequel happens.
What’s Next for Albert Wesker?
While the Wesker of the video games is an evil Umbrella agent from the very start, a brilliant researcher helping the corporation create these dangerous viruses, Tom Hopper’s Wesker isn’t quite so bad. He’s not really in on what Umbrella is doing — and doesn’t even know Ada Wong is his client. He just wants to make some extra dough, even if it means endangering his STARS comrades in the process. Unlike Williams Birkin’s gruesome transformation with the G-virus, the physical effects of the P-virus are much more subtle. While Wesker maintains his human form (with many enhanced abilities), the virus causes a mutation of his pupils, turning them red and cat-like. In the movie, when Wesker asks Ada what’s happened to his eyes, he’s likely referring to this mutation. It’s why he dons sunglasses for most of the video game series. So, now that Wesker has completed his transformation, what’s next? Well, likely an induction into whatever secret organization Ada is working for. In the games, after the events at the Spencer Mansion, Wesker begins working for Umbrella’s major rival, which is simply referred to as “The Organization.” Years after the destruction of Raccoon City, Wesker would spend his time serving the agenda of this mystery developer of bio-weapons until it was eventually swallowed up by another evil pharmaceutical company called Tricell. Ever the company man, that Wesker. If we get to see Wesker in a movie sequel, it’s possible he and Ada will be working for the Organization, adding a second evil faction that our heroes must stop from destroying the planet. That means poor Leon is definitely about to get owned. Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City is out in theaters now.
